Making it easier for non-verbal people to communicate naturally without losing their personal vocal identity, thru utilising their own voice.
-
Respeak is a not-for-profit initiative that restores and re-delivers a person’s own voice when they lose the ability to speak due to Motor Neurone Disease (MND), stroke, cancer, neurological conditions, or physical injury.
-
Respeak treats voice as dialogue, not data. It applies professional dialogue restoration and mixing practices developed across thousands of broadcast programs, commercials, and feature films to preserve natural cadence, emotional delivery, and identity.
The result is communication that carries not only information, but emotional meaning — which is often as important, or more important, than the words themselves.
-
-
Unlike traditional voice banking, Respeak does not require scripted recording sessions or a functioning speaking voice. It works entirely from existing, natural recordings of a person speaking as themselves — phone videos, home footage, interviews, presentations, voicemail, or archival media captured during everyday life.
-
Respeak is language-independent, works alongside existing AAC systems, and is built around data sovereignty, consent, and ethical use. Voices are owned by the individual, never reused, and never monetised.
Success for Respeak means making this capability available, free of cost, to the people whose lives it will most positively affect — while preserving the human details that matter most: a familiar cadence, a pause that sounds right, and a voice that still feels like them.
-
Kearon de Clouet, created Respeak to fill a gap he saw in the ability to help non-verbal people using AAC systems to communicate with much more effectively (and emotionally).
The founder has over 30 years’ experience in voice synthesis, audio engineering, and filmmaking. He has directed and engineered voices across thousands of professional productions and has been involved in voice synthesis since the 1980s.
In the past year, he wrote, directed, and produced a large-scale public series on the ethical use of AI. The series reached more than 4 million viewers globally.
